Skövde is part of Skaraborg's joint energy supply plan

Skaraborg, a leading industrial region, is facing a powerful green transition. The growing industry is creating new opportunities and increasing the need for electricity. To meet future demand, the municipalities of Skaraborg, through the Skaraborg Association of Municipalities, are taking a unique initiative: a joint energy supply plan. The plan covers energy needs, electricity production, grid development and energy storage.

The Executive Board of the League of Municipalities has now adopted this plan, a political agreement that shows the way forward.

- It is gratifying to see the decisiveness shown by Skaraborg. The plan is an important assumption of responsibility, not only for the region but for the whole of Sweden as an industrial nation. It creates the conditions for industrial development in the short and long term," says Klas Ericson, national coordinator for the transition of the automotive industry.

Increasing competitiveness and sustainable development

The aim is to enable local electricity production for new establishments and industrial development. The plan focuses on grid development, electricity production, power balancing, storage and efficiency through collaboration between different actors.

Municipalities are responsible for community planning and identifying suitable areas for electricity generation. Network owners and energy companies develop the electricity grid, while investors establish new electricity generation.

The pace of work needs to increase to support competitiveness and sustainable development. The plan covers all energy sources but prioritizes solar and wind energy until 2030, complemented by storage solutions.

- Access to electricity and power is crucial for Skaraborg's competitiveness. The joint plan shows the way forward and ensures concrete actions for sustainable development," says Theres Sahlström, Chairman of Skaraborgs Kommunalförbund.

Clear direction to meet future needs

Municipalities are now continuing their efforts to integrate energy supply into community planning and engage with network owners, energy companies and investors.

The energy supply plan provides a clear direction to meet future energy needs and strengthen Skaraborg as an industrial region.

- The green transition requires new ways of working and collaboration to meet the timetables. The Acceleration Office wants to spread good examples, and Skaraborg's plan is a positive contribution to this work," says Kristina Alvendal, National Industry Coordinator.
