Classmates at the University of Skövde were united in their love of older game engines. Now Dofhouse is building the game Project: Amica, where retro is combined with youthful creativity.
- Everyone in the world will be able to play Amica, that's our goal," says William Jutbring of Dofhouse.
If you grew up playing various forms of computer games in the 90s and early 00s, there is probably a high probability that you have played Doom and Quake.
Boomer shooter games became big in the 90s and have since created many memories and a kind of inspirational base for many of the FPS games we see on the market today. Doom was built in an engine called the Doom Engine.
The same game engine united the four guys who make up Dofhouse, a game studio based and produced in Skövde. They all had a love for the retro and aesthetics of the 90s and 00s, and loved old boomer shooters.
- We share a vision of what games can and should be. Early on, we realized that we had a special chemistry - both as friends and as game creators," says Jacob Akpinar Olsson.
How does it work to work with a game engine from the 90s?
- Sometimes good! And sometimes not so good. While it has been modified and updated since the 90s, there are still a lot of limitations. It forces us to make a lot of smart solutions and be creative. Making a game the way we want in Doom Engine is not easy, but it shouldn't be!
Amica - a game for the world
The game Dofhouse is working on right now is called Project: Amica. In the game, you control the android SID, who chases a military general through different environments. Amica is not a linear game with separate paths, but rather a connected world where the player moves freely, unlocks new areas and returns with new abilities.
- Amica is action-packed, but also designed to provide an experience that grows and changes," says Jacob Akpinar Olsson.
Creating an experience that changes over time requires not only a dedicated and creative game studio, but also a game community that drives development itself.
This is exactly what Dofhouse wants.
- We will release the game as open source and we will encourage modding, meaning that players can make changes to the game. Our dream is to create an active and engaged community that together makes the game better," says William Jutbring.
There are also more thoughts and advantages to the "simple" design of the game. Accessibility is one of them.
- The advantage of using a simpler game engine is that the technical simplicity allows the game to be played on simpler computers - opening up markets where players do not have access to the latest hardware. Not everyone can play the latest games on their computers, as it is a matter of cost in terms of performance and price. We want everyone to be able to play," says William Jutbring.

Retro to the future?
So how has a retro-inspired boomer shooter game landed among stakeholders in 2025?
Very well, it turns out. They recently participated in OTK Games Expo, a major international gaming expo on Twitch, and are making more progress with the studio every day.
Dofhouse is part of the start-up program, Sweden Game Startup, since December, and is now working hard towards the next step in its gaming journey - finding investors.
- We haven't focused fully on that bit until now, but it's the next step for us. We have participated in pitches, and we will be able to work more towards finding investors during the year," says William Jutbring.
