In the cold darkness of winter, light shines The Santa Claus Society the lives of hundreds of children in Skövde. Since 1877, the association has helped families who are struggling financially and even today the voluntary work continues with the same warmth and commitment.
"We are a small group of volunteers, but thanks to generous donors and great commitment, we can help between 150 and 300 children in Skövde every year with gift cards for shoes and clothes," says Filip Rapp, vice chairman of the Santa Claus Society.
Santa Claus in Skövde engages
Every fall, applications open for families with children between 6 and 16 years old. After a careful and respectful review, early December sees the award ceremony, a joyous occasion for all involved.
"The best response is to see the children collecting their gifts. It becomes a kind of local cycle where many who themselves received help as children, today give back by donating a penny. It shows the power of long-term commitment and the importance of Santa Claus for generations of Skövde residents," says Filip Rapp.

Child poverty is a real problem, even here in Skövde. Despite Sweden being an economically strong country, around 220,000 children live in poverty according to the organization Save the Children.
"These figures are reflected in the support needs we see every year. Many children lack adequate footwear and clothing during the coldest parts of winter, and that's when our intervention is most needed," said Filip Rapp.
Part of something bigger in Skövde
It relies on memorial gifts and donations from individuals, companies and associations. All money goes directly to the cause, without intermediaries.
"We believe and hope that we are helping to make Christmas a little nicer for the children who need it most. It feels incredibly meaningful to be able to contribute," says Filip Rapp.
Getting involved in the Sällskapet Jultomtarna is not only a way to help. It's also a way to be part of something bigger, a community where caring matters and history is carried on with pride.
"Being able to help carry on the tradition feels like a gift for us too," says Filip.
