Inauguration of Killingarundan - Skövde's new hiking trail

Skövde and the area at Billingen's southern slope has become a hiking trail richer and on October 16 at 16.00 it is time for the inauguration at the barbecue area in Fårhagen. The new Killingarundan goes around an active quarry, through older mining areas and along the old embankment to Varnhem. The walk gives the visitor an insight into the importance of the plateau mountain Billingen for man throughout history, and in several places it is possible to explore the different shifts and layers of the mountain.

- During the pandemic years, there was a lot of wear and tear on the existing hiking trails on Billingen. The idea was then born to create new trails to spread visitors to Billingen's southern slope and the inspiration came from Trollstigarna, which Next Skövde had previously developed on Billingen. Killingarundan is accessible to both Skövde residents and visitors. It is just the right length and easy to get to by bike and bus as it starts in an urban environment, says Lotta Stigsdotter, destination developer for Billingen, Next Skövde.

Killingarundan consists of two circular trails, 2 and 5 kilometers long. Along the shorter trail, the walk passes through the Fårhagen area, where the limestone quarrying for cement production that took place in the 1950s is clearly visible. Today, the site has been restored, nature has re-established itself and grazing animals help to keep the land open and benefit biodiversity.

The 5-kilometer trail goes around the active quarry and passes Skogslund, a deserted garden in the middle of the forest. In the past, there was a small house and land where the animals grazed. Lilacs, currant bushes and apple trees still grow here. The walk then continues through an enchanted forest of moss-covered rocks before reaching Heidelberg's landscaped pond and then heading out towards the old railway embankment. The finish finally joins the short trail (2 km) that runs in the old quarry area. There are boards in the area with information about the sites and nature, there is also a barbecue area overlooking the quarry.

The trails have been developed in cooperation with Heidelberg Materials, formerly Cementa, which is active in the area.

- Thanks to the collaboration with Next Skövde, we have been able to jointly develop this hiking trail and we are all very much looking forward to the opening, says Marie Apelgren from Heidelberg Materials.
